This is a beautiful coastal stroll to one of the oldest lighthouses in New Zealand. Nugget Point Lighthouse provides stunning views of the coast, rocks, and the ocean. Bring a camera or binoculars to see all birds and seals below the lighthouse. Keep your eyes open for rare penguins and dolphins in the water. Going early in the morning or catching the sunset is highly recommended!. Feb 2020. It is about a 900m walk to the lighthouse from the parking area and the views along the way are spectacular. If you look down to the rocks on your left when you are walking there, there are often seals sun baking on the rocks. Those 'nugget' shaped rocks are spectacular as well. Beautiful views at the end and well worth the short.

The Nugget Point Lighthouse Walk is a short hike located near Kaka Point, Otago. This trail travels along sea cliffs to Tokata Lighthouse which provides views of 'the nuggets'. This out and back hike is 1.1 miles and gains 308 feet of elevation. This hike starts from Nugget Point Parking Area off of The Nuggets Rd. There are vault toilets located at the trailhead.. It's a short 10 minute walk from the carpark to the lighthouse, built in 1869. Along with dramatic coastal views, Nugget Point is home to abundant wildlife. Kekeno New Zealand fur seals can often be seen lolling on the rocky outcrops and in the summer months you might also spot elephant or leopard seals. View this post on Instagram.
